Staffordshire is an unspoilt and uncrowded county of beautiful woodlands, historic towns and stunning scenery encompassing a National Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a forest in the making.
The Peak District and Staffordshire Moorlands in the north offer invigorating climbs through meandering limestone dales, gritstone crags and heather moorlands. Flash, the highest village in England at 1514 feet above sea level, lies just outside the historic market town of Leek.
The National Forest in the east of the county is an idyllic place for leisurely walking and pony trekking. Over 7 million trees have been planted in recent years within the 200 square miles of forest to create new and maturing woodland. Within the National Forest at Alrewas just outside Lichfield, you can visit The National Memorial Arboretum, the UK’s living centre of Remembrance, opened by the Queen in 2007.
Cannock Chase in the west, is Britian’s smallest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, comprising of 26 square miles of ancient heathland. This is serious mountain biking country with professionally maintained cycle track and pathways. This was once part of the royal hunting forest and you can see fallow deer and many species of woodland birds in the forests of pines and birch trees.
In the south, two miles from Swinfen Hall hotel, lies the Georgian city of Lichfield, birthplace of Samuel Johnson and David Garrick and home to Erasmus Darwin, physician, poet, natural philosopher, inventor and grandfather to Charles Darwin. Here you can visit museums dedicated to Johnson and Darwin as well as the beautiful medieval cathedral, where the Staffordshire Hoard is currently on permanent display.
