A legacy for the future


We recognise that Swinfen Hall has been an integral part of the Lichfield community for over 200 years. Lt-Colonel Michael Swinfen-Broun, who was a very generous benefactor to Lichfield in his lifetime, left his entire estate to the cathedral and city when he died in 1948.

We endeavour to continue this relationship with the city through sponsorship, support of local charities and promotion of local Staffordshire businesses. We are also proud to have been awarded the Staffordshire Environmental Quality Mark in recognition of our environmentally-friendly approach to business.


The Lichfield Festival

Swinfen Hall Hotel has been a major sponsor of the Lichfield Festival for over 20 years and are proud to have welcomed some fabulous performers to our Ballroom including Patricia Routledge, The Barbirolli String Quartet, I Fagiolini performing The Full Monteverdi and Tango Volcano – a fabulous display of Argentinian music and dance. The Lichfield Festival is a ten-day celebration of arts, music, dance and comedy. It has been running for over 30 years and every July brings a host of international celebrities to the city. The diverse range of previous performers has included Nigel Kennedy, Paul Merton, Philip Glass, Nicola Benedetti, Alan Davies, Cleo Laine, Alfred Brendel and Laura Mvula.

The Lichfield Literary Festival

Although the Lichfield Literary Festival only came into being in 2005 it has attracted a stellar cast of authors, politicians and celebrities to the City including Beryl Bainbridge, P.D. James, Matthew Parris, Alexei Sayle, Tony Benn and Roy Hattersley. 2014 marked our first year of involvement and we enjoy hosting events at the hotel as well as sponsoring specific authors during the Festival.


Saxons Hill Community School

This local community special school helps children and young people with physical disabilities and complex medical needs and our relationship with the school stretches back over ten years. In the Summer months a small group of children come each week to grow and tend vegetables in their own plot in our walled garden. A group of older children have also spent time with our housekeeping staff as part of their independent living project.

The Swinfen Hall Hotel Annual Charity Drive

Led by our Charity Czar, Michael Kenyon (also known as the Banqueting Manager), we raise funds each year for our chosen charity. The two annual events are the Staff Summer Family Barbeque and the Christmas Carol Concert. Alongside we hold concerts, dinners, afternoon teas, raffles and other ad hoc events to add to the pot. In recent years our charity drive has supported Acorns Children's Hospice, the National Memorial Arboretum and St Giles Hospice but this year we are raising funds for our friends at Saxons Hill Community School in Lichfield.


In 2003 we embarked on a 10-year Countryside Stewardship Scheme run by DEFRA to help us develop the land in an environmentally-responsible way. We established the 45-acre deer park; planted 600 metres of hedgerows; re-stocked the park with oak, beech and horse chestnut trees, created a scrape to encourage wetland birds and started to restore the beautiful Victorian walled garden which was then just a rutted field.

We established wild hay meadows which produce hay and silage to supplement winter grazing for the deer and commissioned a Woodland Management Plan from the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group. We have now completed the scheme but continue to run the estate on well-established principles using no pesticides or chemicals and respecting the seasons and the wildlife.

We are also proud to have earned ourselves the Staffordshire Environmental Quality Mark (SEQM) which is awarded to businesses that demonstrate they are operating in a good, sustainable way, reducing their negative impact on the environment and supporting their local communities. We enthusiastically recycle our waste and this year start processing our used cooking oil on site to make red diesel for the tractors.

We grow an increasing amount of produce on the estate for the hotel’s kitchens and have constructed a 50 foot greenhouse from re-salvaged materials to continue our agricultural efforts in the winter.

We buy meat, cheese, vegetables and fruits from local farmers who share our passion for quality and freshness. We serve Staffordshire Spring water and beers from local micro-breweries. Our china comes from Wedgwood in the Potteries and our cutlery from Arthur Price (less than a mile away). We enjoy working with local businesses in the knowledge it helps the local economy, lowers our carbon footprint and creates good morale within the business community.
